As a single mom, life can get overwhelming quickly and anxious feelings can be all too familiar emotion. Having your attention being constantly pulled in multiple directions and having the responsibility of taking care of your children alone can make it feel like a lot. However, with some knowledge and support, managing anxious feelings doesn’t have to control your life! Let’s talk about what’s causing your anxious feelings so that you can learn tips and strategies to better understand them and effectively manage them. With a little guidance, you’ll be able to find that inner peace you need!
What’s Causing Anxious Feelings?
There are many factors that can contribute to anxious feelings, especially for single moms. One common cause is the constant pressure and stress of balancing work and caring for children on your own. In addition, if the relationship between you and your ex is difficult, this certainly adds to the stress level. This can be physically and emotionally draining, leaving little time for self-care and relaxation. Stress is really bad on the body. Another factor I experienced was the fear of not being able to provide enough for your children. Another is feeling guilty about getting divorced, not being able to spend enough time with your children or feeling like you’re not doing a good job as a parent. Try to figure out where these negative feelings are coming from. Be aware of where you feel this stress in your body.
Validate Your Feelings
These feelings are completely normal and valid, and it’s important to acknowledge them in order to move past them. Take a moment, and say to yourself, “of course I feel that way”. This is a powerful way to take care of yourself and not have to call someone to share all your frustrated feelings. The last thing you want to do is wear out your friends emotionally.
What Would Feel Nice?
To continue the process, ask yourself “What would have I liked to happen instead?” This can really help in the process. This works fantastic if you are sitting quietly in a calm environment. After doing this, my body and feelings feel more relaxed.
Tips for Managing Anxious Feelings
So how do we start managing these anxious feelings? First, know that it’s okay to ask for help. Whether it’s from a friend, family member, my private Facebook group or professional therapist, having a support system can make all the difference. You are not alone in this journey and there is no shame in reaching out. Especially to have someone understand us that has walked in a similar journey.
One Last Thing…
It’s important to remember that managing anxious feelings is a process and it won’t happen overnight. But with some self-awareness, validation of your emotions, and reaching out for support, you can learn to calm those anxious feelings and find inner peace. As a single mom, you are strong and resilient, but it’s also important to take care of yourself and prioritize your mental, emotional & physical health because stress wreaks havoc on the body.
