As a single mom, managing your finances can be difficult enough, but when you’ve experienced emotional abuse, it can make it even more challenging. Emotional abuse can come from a parent, partner, or friend who prioritizes their needs over yours and manipulates you to serve their wants and desires. The result can be feelings of worthlessness, low self-esteem, and anxious feelings. This emotional turmoil can lead to an inability to manage your finances efficiently and may result in mounting debt, difficulty budgeting, and an over-reliance on credit. In this blog post, let’s explore the effects of emotional abuse and I’ll provide some tips on how to manage your personal finances as a single mom.

Understanding Emotional Abuse

Emotional abuse is a type of psychological manipulation, where the abuser uses tactics such as gaslighting, belittling, and blame-shifting to control and manipulate. This form of abuse can leave victims feeling confused, unsure in decision making, isolated, and powerless, which can result in making it difficult to manage your personal finances. It’s important to untangle these feelings. You may also feel like you are undeserving of financial stability and security, which can lead to inaction when it comes to managing their finances.

The Impact of Emotional Abuse on Personal Finances

Personal finances can be impacted in various ways when you’ve experienced emotional abuse. You may overspend on things that make you feel good or avoid bills altogether because you are emotionally exhausted and it feels too overwhelming. As a result this leads to mounting debt and financial insecurity. Additionally, if you have a low self-esteem and lack confidence in their decision-making, this makes you feel like you cannot make sound financial choices. I am here to say, you have it within you, you just need support.

Taking Control

However, it’s crucial to take action and ignore those negative emotions that are creating financial uncertainty for you. Begin by create a budget, or what i like to call a saving and spending plan.
