Hey single moms! I know you’re busy and one thing that you really don’t have time for is to wash your kid’s hockey gear after every practice or game. You don’t need one more chore to do, especially getting rid of the smell that comes from your kid’s hockey gear. I know firsthand the smell is pretty bad. I have tried different methods to get rid of the smell, like washing equipment in the washing machine. As a matter of fact, it does not work! I tried using fabric freshener – nope, does not work! However, things changed when a friend asked me if I knew of an oil that would work on getting rid of the smell that lingers from hockey equipment! I have some pretty knowledgeable friends and they recommended using some specific ingredients that would completely eliminate the smell. I felt like a scientist and got straight to work. Here’s the exact recipe that helped me get rid of the stink of hockey gear for good.

Attack & Neutralize the Equipment Odor!

First off, let’s address the elephant in the room – the smell that comes from hockey gear is not just any regular smell! It’s sweat & bacteria – ok, enough about that! So before washing the gear it’s important to prep the hockey gear and start removing the smell. I combined 3 cups of baking soda with 15 drops of Purificaiton oil and mixed it together. The oil and baking soda do not clump. Next, you want to spread the mixture onto the equipment. Do not sprinkle it on the equipment. This will not work. You need to pretend like you are putting a thin layer of icing on a cake. I put it in the skates, in the gloves, on the chest protector, shin guards, and elbow pads. Be prepared for a big baking soda mess if you’re doing it on the floor in the basement like I did! Let it stand for 48 hours. If you don’t have 48 hours, do the best you can.

Washing the Hockey Gear

The next step was to wash the equipment with the rest of the hockey gear like the socks, breezers, & jersey’s. I put all the equipment into my washing machine. Then I mixed 4 drops of Purification to 1 cap of Thieves laundry soap. I set the washer to a heavy load and used the cold wash/cold rinse cyle. After it was done washing, all the equipment came out smelling great! Next, I put it in the dryer. You could also choose to let it air dry.

Keep the Fresh Smell Going After Practice & Games!

After each practice or game, my son removes the equipment from his bag and we spray each piece of equipment with a mixture of 1 cup water, 1/2 cup peroxide, 1 cap full of Thieves household cleaner and 10 drops of Purification. Since I have been using this, his hockey equipment smells fantastic! It is best to store this in a glass bottle for best results.

One Last Thing…

There’s nothing more unpleasant than dealing with the smell of hockey gear especially during car rides and staying in hotels! Now that you have the recipe, you can enjoy the car ride, hotel nights and fresh scent even with the hockey equipment near you. Try out the recipes above for neutralizing, washing and spraying after each practice or game and you’ll notice a significant difference and never have to be concerned about that terrible smell again. With these tips, your kid’s hockey gear will be clean and fresh, ready to take on the next game.
