Renee Hugger, AFC (Accredited Financial Counselor) Blog Page

Everyone knows that in order to make financial changes, it’s important to make a plan for financial success and happiness. It’s definitely something you have to work at it. Whether you want to form a new habit or break an old one, change is hard. And usually, the bigger the change, the more time and effort it requires. But what if I told you that lasting change could be as easy as taking one extremely small at a time?

I just attended the AFCPE symposium (a huge conference about money) and it was terrific! Especially if your like me, excited to learn more about self-development and finances.

How to start

The speaker, Ryan Law, said starting with the end goal in mind was the best way to start. This means understanding what kind of change you want to make and why it is important to you. With this knowledge, you can then take the smallest step possible. This step needs to be so small that you can accomplish it today. So for example let’s say we want to start saving money so we can reduce stress when unexpected expenses come up.

Identify your Why

Next, identify why you want to make a change. Equally important, make sure you know why this change matters. For our example, let’s say we want to start saving money .

Tiny steps are the key

Once you have identified your why, start taking small steps to achieve it. These steps should be so tiny that they don’t feel like a chore and you can easily get them done without much effort. For example, if you want to save more money each month, start with $1.00. It’s important to make one small step and be able to accomplish it.

Implement your strategy

Decide when you are going to save $1.00. It’s important to pick a day and put it on the calendar. By doing this, you are creating a new habit and setting yourself up for success. After you save your dollar, how will you feel?

Support and Tracking

When performance is measured, performance is improves. So make sure you set up ways to track your progress. How often will you save money? In our example, let’s say we are going to have $1.00 direct deposited into our savings account from each paycheck.

Accountability Partner

In addition, an accountability partner is really important. Who will keep you accountable? Do you have a close friend doing the same thing? Maybe it’s a financial coach. In this example, let’s say your accountability partner is Financial Coach, Renee who is dedicated to confidentiality, will hold you accountable for your goals and will cheer you on as you accomplish each small step.

When we want to set a goal for ourselves, we often get impatient and want to see big results immediately. But if we want those results to stick, it’s important that we start small and celebrate our successes along the way.

You can use this same method for any area of your life where you’re looking to make a change. Whether you want to eat healthier, spend less money, or be more productive at work, remember that small steps matter!

One last thing…

The next time you find yourself wanting to make a change in your life, don’t get discouraged if it feels like too much. Just START SMALL! Set realistic goals for yourself and build on your successes along the way. Remember: Starting with the smallest step in the right direction is huge progress!
