What are my values and why do they matter?

You may not realize it, but your values play a big role in your life. Your values are the things that you believe are important in the way you live and work. They influence your behavior and Decision-making. Because your values guide your life, it’s important to have a good understanding of what they are and why they matter to you.

So, what exactly are values?

Values are principles or standards of behavior that you personally that you believe in. Everyone has their own specific set of values which is what makes us all unique individuals. Some common values that people might have include: family, friends, community, education, growth, love, success, freedom, etc.

It’s important to take some time periodically to think about your own values and make sure that they align with how you’re living your life. If they don’t align, it can lead to feelings of dissonance or conflict. When that happens, it means that something needs to change in order for you to feel more in harmony with yourself.

Part of living a fulfilling life is making sure that your actions line up with your personal belief system. When they don’t, it can cause stress and dissatisfaction. However, when your thoughts, words, and deeds all support each other, it creates a sense of balance and peace within yourself.

Why are values important?

Your values also impact your relationships with other people. When you share similar values with someone, you’re more likely to get along with them and have a good relationship. On the other hand, if you have different values than someone, it can be difficult to relate to them and understand them. That’s not to say that relationships with people who have different values are impossible, but it can be more challenging. You can learn more about your values in 90 seconds or less.

Our values also drive our decision-making when it comes to spending money. I can help you explore your values and help you understand them by scheduling an appointment with me. I am happy to help you. If you are living paycheck to paycheck, learn how to save money here.

Examples of values

Let’s say for example that one of your core values is honesty. If you find yourself regularly telling little white lies or even stretching the truth a bit here and there when it would be just as easy to tell the truth instead (such as telling a friend their new haircut looks great even if you don’t really like it), then that value of honesty isn’t being honored in your behavior. In this case, simply being more honest moving forward would help bring more alignment into your life regarding this particular value.

Final thoughts

In conclusion, values are important because they guide our lives and our decision-making process; they also play a role in our relationships with others by helping us understand each other better (or not). If we want to live fulfilling lives that are aligned with who we are as individuals, then it’s crucial that our thoughts, words, and actions all support each other by our common core values.
