Understanding Trauma and Recovery: Healing Your Emotional Scars

Hey Friends, trauma can scar us emotionally, and the impact can be long-lasting. I understand this all too well. It can affect our mental, physical & emotional health. In addition, it can affect our social lie along with our personal and work relationships . It can alter the way we feel, think, and behave, leaving deep emotional wounds that can be hard to heal. The good news is, I am living proof you can heal. Equally important, the trauma caused by emotional abuse can be overcome, and recovery is possible with the right strategies and support. In this blog post, I’ll talk about the impact that trauma had on my emotional health, and discuss effective strategies for recovery. My desire is to bring you hope.

Understanding the impact of trauma on emotional health:

The trauma I experienced can cause a range of emotional and physical symptoms. The symptoms I had include anxiety, depression, heart palpitations, panic attacks, irritability, hyper-vigilance, dissociation, and high startle response to name a few. These symptoms may persist for months or years after leaving an abusive relationship which affects the quality of life and can make it hard to function normally. I sometimes felt like I was barely surviving. The impact of trauma is not the same for everyone.

Strategies for recovery:

I know first hand recovering from trauma is a process and a worthwhile journey that takes time, effort, and patience. Some key strategies that helped me in the recovery process include:

  • Seeking professional help from a therapist or counselor – This really helped me in the beginning to help me identify the root cause of what I was experiencing and why. It helped me feel a little more normal, that I wasn’t crazy and there was nothing “wrong” with me like I had been told.
  • Building a support system is so important! This is what gives you strength. When you surround yourself with people you trust, they can provide emotional, practical, and social support. This can be family or friends that you trust, support groups in your town, or my online community on Facebook just for Single Moms who are determined to heal from emotional abuse & thrive.
  • I found taking care of my physical and emotional health by eating well and exercising were super important. In addition, getting enough sleep and practicing relaxation techniques proved to be very helpful on a daily basis for me. Some examples are sitting still for 20 minutes, (this was very difficult for me at first) calming the mind by focusing on a fan or listening to the rain in an app, or yoga with Adrienne on YouTube can be very helpful.
  • Practicing self-compassion and self-care, by treating yourself with kindness, understanding, and respect, and avoiding self-judgment, criticism, and getting off the racetrack in your mind about what you should have done differently. This never helps.
  • One of the side effects of emotional abuse is inflammation. Inflammation triggers worry, low spirits and brain fog. Restore your body from emotional trauma from the inside out. Sleep better, get more energy & handle stress easier. BTW, I drink 4 oz every day. Here is the link to the juice that has helped me tremendously.

One Last Thing…

It’s important to remember that recovery from trauma is a process and not something that can be rushed. It takes time, effort, and patience, but it is possible to heal and move forward. By seeking professional help, building a support system, taking care of your physical and emotional health, and practicing self-compassion and self-care, you can overcome the effects of emotional abuse and live the life you so desire. I did and you can too! I am here to cheer you along in your journey.
