Overcoming Emotional Abuse: Understanding the Lingering Effects on Single Moms

Emotional abuse can have damaging effects on anyone who has experienced it. As a single mom, you may have experienced emotional abuse in your past relationship and it can continue to affect your life long after the relationship has ended. In this blog post, I will discuss what emotional abuse is, the lingering effects it can have on a single mom, and most importantly, how to overcome it.

It is possible to overcome toxic relationships and build a healthy future for yourself😊

What is Emotional Abuse?

Emotional abuse can be defined as any behavior that is intended to control, manipulate, or belittle another person. So, if you feel less than your significant other, this could be a red flag or not. This type of abuse can take many forms, including verbal abuse, name-calling, gaslighting, and minimizing your feelings. Emotional abuse can be difficult to recognize because it does not leave visible scars or physical injuries. However, it does leave deep emotional wounds. It can be so subtle that you don’t realize it but know you are unable to live the way you are right now. That’s how it was for me. I didn’t realize I was being emotionally abused until after I left the relationship.

How Does Emotional Abuse Affect Single Moms?

Emotional abuse can have lingering effects on a single mom that can impact her life in a variety of ways. Some of the most common effects of emotional abuse include low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and difficulty trusting others. I have experienced all these symptoms. These effects can make it difficult for a single mom to form healthy relationships, build confidence, and advocate for herself and her children.

Overcoming Emotional Abuse: Seek Support

Recognizing that you are a survivor of emotional abuse is the first step towards healing. Seeking out support from a trusted friend, family member or mental health professional can be very helpful. If you don’t want to talk to anyone or don’t feel safe sharing what you have been through, you can do self-therapy. Self-therapy is not for everyone. Practice Self-Care

Another way to overcome the lingering effects of emotional abuse is by practicing self-care. Make time for yourself each day to engage in activities that you enjoy and that makes you smile. Try being dreamy, and visualize a place in your mind that would make your heart super happy. Go for a walk and notice something you have never seen before.  It’s important to get plenty of rest, drink lots of water, exercise regularly, and eat a healthy, balanced diet. By taking care of yourself, you can build resilience and strengthen your well-being so you can cope with the unexpected challenges life can bring. Focus on Rebuilding Your Self-Esteem

One of the most challenging aspects of emotional abuse is the destruction of self-esteem that it can cause. It is essential to focus on rebuilding your self-esteem by realizing the negative thoughts you are thinking. It’s so important to stop these negative stories in your mind. In addition, be able to replace saying “what if
” to “Of course I did”. Give yourself patience and know there is support for you. Remember that healing from emotional abuse is a journey, and it takes time and effort to heal your emotional wounds.

One Last Thing

Emotional abuse can have long-lasting effects on a single mom that impacts her ability to move forward and build resilient relationships in the future.
