How I’m overcoming the high startle response as a survivor of domestic violence

As a survivor of domestic violence, I am all too familiar with not feeling safe and as though someone is always watching which leads to being overwhelmed by fear and anxiety. The high startle response that often accompanies this can be so embarrassing and made me want to isolate myself. It’s something I struggled to manage for many years, but I have found ART therapy to be an amazing tool overcome the undesirable responses I used to give, like screaming. Here is another way ART Therapy is helping me live a life I love.

What is the high startle response?

The high startle response is a reflex reaction to sudden or unexpected stimulus. This response is often characterized by an abrupt, intense jerk of the body that can be accompanied by a loud cry or scream. It may also cause various physiological changes such as increased heart rate and blood pressure, as well as sweating. Another helpful tool I use is this watch.

What are the symptoms of the high startle response?

The high startle response, or startle reflex, can cause a person to experience a range of symptoms such as:

  • Abrupt jerking of the body
  • Loud screaming or crying
  • Increased heart rate and blood pressure
  • Sweating
  • Difficulty breathing or hyperventilation
  • Feelings of fear and panic
  • Muscle tension
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Loss of appetite or nausea

It is important to note that the symptoms of the startle response can vary from person to person, and may be more severe in individuals with a history of anxiety or trauma. In some cases, the startle response can cause a person to experience a full-blown panic attack. It is important to recognize the signs of the startle response and seek appropriate medical help if needed.

What can trigger the high startle response?

The high startle response can be triggered by a variety of unexpected stimuli, such as loud noises, sudden movements, or startling visuals. It is important to note that triggers can vary from person to person, and some may be more sensitive than others. It is also important to note that the startle response can become worse in individuals who have a history of anxiety or trauma, as these stimuli may be perceived as more threatening.

How can ART Therapy help survivors overcome the high startle response?

I personally have had tremendous success from ART Therapy. My suggestion would be to contact the therapists in your area and ask if they provide this type of therapy. In my opinion, it’s another useful tool you can try so you can live a life in peace and harmony. Emotional healing is so important so you can life the life you so desire without living in fear.

What should you expect from ART Therapy sessions for survivors of trauma?

The therapist walks you through how to change the way you react. The therapy is conducted by waving their hand in a back and forth motion with your eyes following their hand. You “play a scene” in your mind about what you would like to change. Then the therapist walks you through your emotions by continuing to wave their hands back and forth. The eye movement is what retrains your brain to react in a way you choose. It’s so cool!

One last thing…

ART therapy has been immensely useful in helping me manage the high startle response that is often associated with domestic violence. It has enabled me to process my traumatic experiences and gain greater control over my reactions. Through this type of therapy, I have been able to change the way I react in a much more “normal” way so that I can live a life free from fear. Live an emotionally, mentally and physically life you love with Ningxia Red.
