How Can I Reverse the Effects of Emotional Abuse

As a single mom, you may have faced emotional abuse from your former partner. The experience can leave you feeling confused, sad, anxious and with deep wounds that don’t seem to heal. But there is hope – it’s totally possible to recover from the effects of emotional abuse. If you are having a hard time reading the words emotional abuse, I did too. In this blog post, I’ll discuss how to move forward in order to create an emotionally peaceful and heartwarming life for yourself and your family. We’ll explore techniques such as acknowledging your feelings, empowerment strategies, seeking help when needed, developing empathy for yourself and others as well as doing self-healing. By the end of this post, you will be armed with information on how best manage difficult emotions associated with past relationships while finding ways to create a better future for yourself and those around you.

Acknowledging your Feelings

It’s important to acknowledge and validate your feelings of hurt, anger, fear, sadness and confusion. Emotional abuse can make us doubt our feelings and make us try to question our own reality. By recognizing and admitting (I know this is tough) the impact it has had on us emotionally, we can start to heal. It’s okay to not be ok, feel sad or angry about what happened – these emotions are valid and should not be ignored.

Empowerment Strategies

Next, it’s important to focus on self-empowerment and building your self-esteem. Emotional abuse can make us feel powerless, because someone has wanted to control us and keep us week. That’s not going to happen anymore! We are going to take control of our lives and start making decisions for ourselves, we can regain a sense of empowerment. This could be anything from starting a new hobby, creating a healthy lifestyle of exercise and eating or an activity, like painting your nails so you feel pretty. It’s important to start setting small goals for yourself so you can see the improvement. That way when you look back you will be proud of yourself and smile.

Seeking Professional Help

It’s important to remember that it’s okay to seek help from a professional therapist or counselor if you are struggling with the confusion (that’s what I experienced) and the effects of emotional abuse. They can provide a safe and non-judgmental space for you to explore your feelings and talk about what happened.

Developing Empathy for Yourself and Others

Emotional abuse can make it difficult for us to trust others and ourselves. But by developing empathy, we can understand why we acted or reacted in certain ways, and learn to forgive both ourselves and our abusers (I know, I don’t like this word either). This doesn’t mean excusing their behavior, but rather understanding that they may have their own deep wounds that caused them to act in hurtful ways.

Self-Healing

Finally, another option is self-healing. I found this to be very helpful. This is a faster approach to healing the heart from all the heartbreak you have been through. This program is not for everyone. The benefits of self-healing is that you can do it when it’s convenient for you. In the process, I experienced myself having natural boundaries, heal my past heartaches, and gaining confidence like I never had before.

One Last thing…

Remember, the effects of emotional abuse can have long-lasting impacts on us and it’s important to be patient with ourselves during the healing process. It takes time to recover from any kind of heartache, however, acknowledging our feelings, creating empowerment strategies, seeking professional help or even practicing self-healing we know we have options so we can move forward and create a better life for ourselves and our children.
