The first step in any process of rebuilding credit and becoming financially independent is creating a saving and spending plan that fits your lifestyle. This means looking at how much money you bring in each month, subtracting all necessary expenses (mortgage/rent, bills, childcare, etc.), and then deciding what you will do with the rest of your money. Make sure to include savings goals and fun money in your budget! This will help ensure that you have a fund to cover unexpected expenses.
Once you have an established budget, the next step is to focus on paying down debts. There are a couple different ways to get this done. One is to start by tackling high-interest debts first—this way, more of your payments will go toward reducing principal rather than interest payments. What worked really well for me was paying off smaller debts one at a time until all of your debt is paid off. It may take time, but it is so worth it in the long run!
Finally, the last step is to rebuild your credit score by making payments on time and using credit responsibly. Make sure to only use less than 30% of your credit limit on each credit card each month so that lenders see that you can manage debt in a responsible manner. You should also monitor your credit report regularly for inaccuracies or fraudulent activity at https//annualcreditreport.com. In order to build credit, you have to use credit. To get this accomplished, spend $5.00 on your credit card each month and pay that off (and more if you have a balance). Another option is to get a secured credit card from your financial institution.
Taking control of your finances as a single mom isn’t may be overwhelming—but with dedication and hard work, it can be done easily! By following these steps for rebuilding credit and achieving financial independence as a single mom – creating a saving and spending plan, paying down debts, and rebuilding credit – you will get the best opportunities in life! I am here cheering you on!
